I was looking into the business of bar tending. I have heard that you don't need to go to bar tending school, is this true. If I don't have to, would a degree help me get a position over someone that doesn't have one. Is it hard work. Do you have to know things like bottle flipping. How much money do they generally make when their first starting out. Are their any cheap and good classes online instead of going to an actual bar tending school. Thanks for your answers?

School isn't a bad way to go. Try barbacking somewhere for awhile as well. And work on your looks. That seems to be what people are hiring these days. You don't have to be a model, but do the best with what you have. If you are lucky enough to get in somewhere you can make between 100 and 700 a night depending on where you work. Trust me though, it's short term and I highly recomend using it as an income while you go to college. There is rarely a career behind the bar.

I have been in the food industry for 20 years and have hired my share of bartenders. So let me say this: bartending school is a scam. I wouldn't waste 2 seconds reading your degree. If I was considering hiring you, i would put you behind the bar and see if you knew how to pour without giving away the store. I would also want to make sure you were good at engaging the customers. If high volume, I would want to see your speed. Know the basic drinks, how to pour and how to build customers and you can succeed. What you make depends on where you work and how good you are at the things I mentioned. I know a bartender that works 2 days a week and makes 40k/year.

A lot of that depends on where you are located. What type of bar you want to work at makes a difference as well. A good personality can not be learned at bartender school. What they teach you is how to make drinks a nd read customers. In most cases if you have shccoling you can be hired before someone with no expereince but not be hired above someone who is already works in the bar with experience. One type of class that might be helpful is Called TIPS or BASSAT training it helps you learn when to cut someone off and how to handle certain cituations. It is required in certain states.

I've been a Bartender,(part-time) for the last 11 years. Put 3 kids through college with the money. I would highly recommend a bartending school as opposed to just OJT. You'll still need some OJT when you start your new craft. It also shows any prospective employers that you're serious. You'll learn alot about when & how to slow down over eager consummers. Good school in the Middle Atlantic states is Wines,Steins, & Cocktails, 1 night a week for 5 weeks, good & not expensive.Do a Yahoo search for their info. Some schools also assist with job placement. Good luck..

Two things you need to be a successful bartender....

1. A good personality.
2. The ability to make drinks.

Just get a book with cocktail recipes and look thru it. Memorize the popular drinks and if someone hits you with one you don't know look it up.
Remember your pay is based on tips, so make your customers happy. Good luck!
