It's been that way for a long time however, in some cases it's been the other way around or the women uses both names with a dash between the names.

Because for most of our Western Society's history we followed a Patriarchal system. IE man rules his household. For many years the wife was still considered the property of the man, and the inheritance was passed on to the oldest male son. This has started to change in our modern culture, but the tradition still remains.

In the old times, the men were essentially 'given' the woman from her family. Dowrys were used to help with the upkeep of the wife. After the 'transaction' the woman is now her husband proerty and must make no more reference to her old family, therefore losing her last name.

It started long ago when women were legally a man's property. Now it is tradition and easier for legal purposes. When I say easier, it is easier if the couple have the same last name, not necessarily the man's.

I think it was started WAY back in the day. I think its a sign of proporty..that you belong to someone, and that you aren't single anymore.

Now a days when you get married, its not the same as it was back then, We don't marry our daughters off for more land, and to make our families richer..its all about love now a day. You don't have to change your name if you don't want to, and he can take your last name too.

Because a long time ago women used to be property of men, so when they got married the last name would be replaced with her "owner's"

It is done to show the union between man and women. The mans last name is taken because he is to be the head of the house. If you choose not to take his last name you are not required but that is the purpose of it

Back when most women respected their husbands they took his last name. Now some women would rather have a toy and artificial insemination along with Diane or Jane from around the corner as a spouse.

Not sure who started it, but it's not required. Nowdays men can take the woman's last name. But for tradition it's to carry on his family name.

Perhaps it has a lot to do with the old notion that by marrying, the woman would "pass" from her father to her husband. So, she would symbolically give up her father's name to take her husband's.
