Some one once told me it was to keep planes from hitting the power lines but in several locations they are on low lines and higher lines towering above have no markings.

Ths has been an ongoing discussion with friends for about four years now. help me out!

They are to warn pilots that there is a power line there. They are near airports.

Saying that they are to keep the lines from shaking is incorrect. If this were the case, then all power lines should have them.

I have noticed the markers in two types of locations: when the lines are a certain elevation, or when the lines cross a commonly-used flight path. But for these purposes, it doesn't make sense to mark only the lower lines. So I can only thing of two possibilities: 1) the regulations have changed, and the lines were built under different rules; or 2) the things you are referring to aren't markers - there is a second type of thing that hangs on lines to dampen harmonic vibrations that can tear the lines off in high winds.

They put them on long lines a a damper. It stops the wires from swinging all around like a rubber band when just the right wind velocity blows for a while.

If its not for the airplanes/aeroplanes then I think they are there so that the wires dont touch. Or so that the electricians can distinguish which lines are live or earthy.

I'm pretty sure that they are for airplanes.
