I don't think that there is a real scientific answer to this question, but it is believed that dreams occur, because they are your mind's way of working things out and organizing itself while you sleep. (Which is why, often times, when something is bothering you, you will have a dream that is related in some way to it... and the parts of your dream that you don't understand, might mean something to your subconscious as well, seeing as dreams are created by your subconscious mind).

It is a state of mind your are in! Sometimes it is a message of what is bothering you! Sometimes it is just a dream! Hard to say really .... or the Docs would be out of work in that area.... then mind is a complex area!
