What is an affordable camera that produces great quality pictures? It doesn't have to have much zoom, but the megapixels need to be good.

most cameras today are 3x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom. dont worry about the digital zoom because it is just cropping of the picture, you want just the optical zoom. $150 would be a very good price for a camera, one in such range is the canon a530. good quality, compact, and easy to use.

I bough this Kodak C533 5 MP with 3X optical and 5x digital zoom for $129. It is pretty decent camera comes with (I believe) 20 MB internal memory. Great for gift. I also bought 512 MB Kodak SD card for only 25 bucks. You can buy it from Walmart or Circuitcity.

Canon SD800IS about $350-$400
28mm wide angle and optical image stabilization.
Fuji F30 less than $300. ($50 rebate from Fuji as well)
the ONLY compact camera with a good high ISO capability for taking indoor/low light shots without an annoying flash.

I bought a Kodak - complete set up with a printer & carrying case at Sears for under $200. Very easy to use and takes great pictures

I bought one for my wife...
I've heard 3.0 megapixels or better is ok.
If budget permits, get one with optical and digital zoom. If you have to pick between which type of zoom...get one with OPTICAL zoom.

I'd recommend you go to a decent camera store and ask the sales people to help you. It's hard to make recommendations without knowing your price range.

Canon's SD models are very compact and take great photos.
SD700 IS...6MP, 4x optical, image stabiliser...very stylish looking.

the kodak V603 has 6.1 megapixels and takes wonderfull pic and is thin and can also take short videos.....
