I don't feel you got a straight answer on that one. I would start with cleaning up your computer....
Download, update and run Spybot---http://www.safer-networking.org/ . Don't forget to use the Immunize feature.
Download, update and run Adaware---http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/products/select_your_product.php
Download RegScrubXP--http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2048
Safely cleans junk out of the Windows 2000/XP system registry. All changes made to the registry are fully restorable to it's original condition. You can make an exclusion list of registry entries that RegScrubXP will not display as problems. You can sift through a list of file extensions, company names, run upon startup programs, Internet Explorer history, and uninstall programs to delete what you think is junk.
Run your anti-virus program. Don't have one? You can run a online scan at http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Do a disk cleanup---Start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Cleanup
You can find Disk Defrag at the same path.

Does it freeze then start to work again? Or is it all she wrote after freezing?
Higher Internet speed is only going to help the rate at which you access the Internet. It won't help anything else in your computer run faster.
Try scanning for spy ware with AdAware, SpyBot, and Windows Defender. Spy ware is the #1 thing that slows down computers. The other thing I'd suggest is to defrag the hard drive. Look under Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and run the Disk Defragmenter.
If you are looking at slow Internet, then I'd say yes, time to go to DSL or Cable.

Broadband connection has nothing to do with the computer freezing. In the worst case scenario your internet speed will be very slow, but otherwise your computer should work just fine. There might be multiple causes, but usually it's just a software problem, but you can't rule out a hardware failure either.
Possible software problems:
- pc is cluttered with spyware, ad-aware, viruses
- bad settings, cluttered registry, poorly unistalled programs,
- bad drivers
- unnecessary services running
Possible hardware problems:
- disk failure (bad blocks)
- swolen capacitors on the mainboard
- faulty video adapter

Your computer freezes if you have virus, if you do not have adequate ram if the hard drive is going bad if you have a lot of junk files on it if you are using dial up.so pick one.
