I have already changed the startup options and cleared unwanted programs, cleared cache, have spyware/virus remover. The internet seems to work fine as far as speed but windows in general is slooooow, especially at startup. What can i do to help this?

You know, it's worth trying Systweak:

It lets you see what's happening at startup and turn of unnessesary options at startup.

Even the demo is pretty helpful, and it's not as hard to other startup tweaking applications. Good luck.

Often this is due to a lot of unnecessary junk left in the registry. The registry is *not* a place to go mucking around ;)

I have used a program called "disk clean" which has helped, but there are a couple of things you might check.

Do you have partitions on your disk? If so, where is the swapfile located? If it is on the C partition, I'd suggest a defrag of the D partition (if you have one) and changing the swapfile to the D partition. Then defrag the C partion (in safe mode).

At this point, change the swapfile back to the C partition and set it to a fixed size (about twice the amount of ram you have in the computer - so long as you don't have more than 512 MB of ram. I'm not sure about the desired size should you have more than 512 MB of ram, but it should be fixed - maximum and minimum size set the same).

What this will do is prevent the swapfile from becoming fragmented (which will affect the speed of your computer).

Best regards,
Jim

Try defragmenting the hard drive. This will order all of the programs and bytes on the disk and will help your computer run faster. You can do that by going to the control panel under "maintenance".

Hi,

This may sound long-winded, but your best option is to re-install windows using your original windows recovery CD.

This will retain all data unless it says otherwise, but you should backup your important data, and your internet browser bookmarks, and other things like photos/music.

This really is the best way to speed up your computer!

Try Defragmanting your hard drives or try disk cleanup available in properties windows of each drive.

Get a Registry cleaner. If that doesn't solve it.Add more RAM (Memory).
