If you reformatted your hard drive when you installed Windows 2000, and it has the NTFS file system, it would be impossible to access that data from a Windows ME; so MAKE a Disk of any important data.
If you want to GO BACk to Windows 98 or ME, then use the install disk. You might have to use FDISK from the Windows 98/ME diskette to delete the partitions.
Your error was proably not having an adequent computer for Windows 2000. You would need 20GB of hard drive space, 128MB of RAM and the computer should be a Pentium II 400 MHZ as a minimum. But if you have this minimum specification, then you probably had problems finding all of the proper device drivers. Visit your computer manufacturer's website or http://www.driverguide.com
In general, you would want to download the SP4 Service Pack for Windows 2000 and get all of the updates. Windows 2000 provides you with much greater security; as Windows 98 and Windows ME are wide open for outside attack.
Good luck and Happy Computing!

confident that's going to likely be a worry. i do no longer understand why human beings lie to others on right here all of the time. Downgrading is an exceedingly huge worry. that's accomplished. yet that would not substitute the certainty that's a worry. domicile windows is incredibly designed to no longer make it easier to do a downgrade. So once you attempt to put in a Win2000 or WinXpPro (lots greater valuable determination than 2000) the setup software will refuse to open. this implies you're able to desire to do each little thing manually. you in addition to could will unfastened each little thing that may no longer domicile windows on your device. The workplace suite and ALL different classes that don't installation as a factor of domicile windows, would be long gone. And the variations which you will have on backup disks, won't artwork with the older OS, as they could have been designed to artwork with Vista. So now as properly to having to load in the OS and then installation all of the updates mandatory, you presently could desire to discover and shipment each software you opt for that has been lost. the different element, which yet another respond had pronounced; there are machines available that have been designed to run Vista from the start. They on no account had Xp or 2000 drivers for the hardware. this could propose you won't be in a position to get your sound to run, or no community card, or per probability the video will in basic terms run in the low resolutions, with not one of the three-D rendering you opt for. the superb answer in case you're desperate to pass backwards, and lower back, i could propose going to Win Xp professional, on the grounds that it incredibly is utilized by employing companies and could be supported a techniques longer than 2000 or Xp domicile, is to touch the maker of the computing gadget and notice in the event that they're going to provide or sell you a series of restore CD's or DVD which will restore an Xp OS on your device, alongside with all of the utility that would have come on the device with Xp. In that way you have got manufacturing unit supported utility, and could have each little thing, no longer in basic terms a bare bones 2000 or Xp installation.

Short answer is yes you can go back. However I would strongly suggest not to. WinME is a HORRIBLE OS. The worst OS produced by Microsoft. I would personally try and pound out the problems with Win2k, its a much more stable OS.
But if you must go back to WinME . The easiest way is to insert those discs you have and restart the computer with them in it. It should prompt you to boot from Disc, obviously you'll hit enter, then just follow the onscreen instructions.

The only way you can go back to ME from WIN2000 is to re-format the hard drive. You will have to back up all of your data before doing so or you will loose it.

Yes, you can re-install them, but I reccomend using Microsoft Windows XP/ Microsoft Windows Vista. They're really easy to use once you get used to them.

Re-install Win98 then ME. ME is just an upgrade of the GUI to WIN98.
