I am unclear if it goes from the date you were first diagnosed or the date you actually applied when determining benefits.

How does it apply to children?

If you get approved, you will get back pay to the date of the application-not the date of diagnosis. I have two children who are both on SSI-the payments went back to the date of the application. My oldest son had a g-button 5 months before I knew I could apply for him and the payments only went back to the date of applicaation. I applied for my younger son a month before he got his button so that he was approved the month he had surgery.

It goes by the date you apply for it, I'm on SSD, and it started the date I applied, they will give you backpay if you are approved from the day you apply (at least it did in my case).

ssi just as ss disability benefits begin when you are what they call "qualified". there is usually a 6 month waiting period that you must go through before they consider you qualified.

It begins (if approved) the date you were disabled. Meaning the date you had to quit working due to your disability.

They don't begin until you apply for them and get approved, which could take about a week.
