i guess what i mean is can a man in his 40's get toned out, not necessarily ripped. i am only 33 but just curious

It will be tough to put on a lot of muscle at this age for most people. But if you have reasonable amount of muscle, you can maintain it and add a little to it. You can def. reduce your fat and look more defined.

I started weight lifting in my mid-thirties. I went from toned to ripped in a year or two. I am now 44 and still ripped. The trick is that there is no trick; only work. You just have to keep at it, year after year. Look at Hugh Jackman. He's 45.
