if you wanna be "computer" expert, go for C/C++ or even Assembler [just for trying out]. Then, move on to higher level langs like C#.NET or Java if you prefer.

But, if you want to be a "Programming" expert, i'd suggest you stick with the "easy to start with" .NET framework and IDE, and start with C++ or C#. Because the tools and the entire thing in itself is so easy and user friendly in itself, as a newcomer, you wont be stressed that much. There is something in it for every level of experience, it is easy when begining, and it can be the staff of a master progeammer. The process later on is guided by your experience and liking.

All programming languages are similar. If you learn one, you will be able to use that knowledge with almost any other. Most of the ideas and algorythms are the same. It is just a matter of learning some different keywords and syntax ("cat" instead of "dir"). So look around for the cheapest way you can learn a language, and start with it.

They're all much the same - the theory behind them all is practically identical, and that's the important thing to master.

Personally, I found Delphi an incredibly easy to learn language, yet it has a whole lot more power than say VB or Java.

Another concern is what do you plan to do with your skills? If you want to write web-based apps, there's little point in learning C. Similarly, if you want to write 3D games, you'd be wasting your time on ASP.

C# (C Sharp). Based on the ubiquitous.NET framework technologies. It's quite easy with Microsoft VS (Visual Studio) 2005, with the autocompletion feature (Intellisense) & there's a free Express Visual C# version available for download too.
