write protected (disk) means that the disk is write protected... literally.

write protected means that u cannot write new data to the disk...
also u cannot make a copy of the disk without prior permission... its something like a copyright...

write protected often reffered to a floppy disk or some other sources with this option... when write protected is on there is no data can be delete from the source u r reading and there is not possible for u to write or burn anything data to this source..

I believe that it means that whatever you are using is protected by another source and you cannot write over it..

it means that you can not alter the document without the proper permissions. permissions are assigned to your account by a network administrator. depending on your position with the company you may or may not need to make changes.
