I posted yesterday asking about hospital costs etc as i need to get all my teeth pulled under GA due to my terrible fear :) I had one answer about IV sedation. How good is it? I am extremely terrified i need all my teeth pulled except for 5. Are you aware at all of whats going on. Are you pretty much out to it that you have no idea of whats happening? It might be an option for me rather than getting knocked out but i need to know it will pretty much put me under to the point where i am oblivious to everything (pulling, noise, etc) i am suffering continual absesses as well, and understand your gums tend to not take the anesthetic to will. Will this affect me, will i feel the needles etc or will the IV eliminate this.
I am at two minds now, i would rather go under completely as if i know i wont feel anything but at a $!500 price tag for the day surgery at hospital, plus anethiest fees, i will save considernably if i go with the IV i imagine! Anyone had good or bad experiences?

ME TOO!! I have had teeth removed with GA done in dentists office. the sedative they give you is different. believe it or not you are actually awake but you will not feel anything see anything or remember ANYTHING!! trust me! you will wake up AFTER it's done. no needles in your mouth, simply an iv in your arm.
I too am terrified of dentists this is the ONLY way. go to a dental surgeon.

I had to get 5 teeth taken out by an oral surgeon under IV sedation. I was scared, but I didn't even feel the needle prick and within a few seconds I was out. I was completely out, no idea what went on, no dreaming, just out.lol When I came out of it though I felt terrible. I was so disoriented and my mouth was so sore. But I am very anxious at the dentist so I would not have liked to be awake when they cut my teeth out. It's not too bad.

Sedation is probably just what you need. There are drugs that will not only relax you, but will help you forget the whole experience. You will be awake and breathing on your own, no tube down your throat, and blissfully unaware of what is going on.
We even have drugs that will get you drowsy enough that you can fall asleep (which is different than general anesthesia, where you are PUT to sleep - well, not really sleep - it's drug-induced unconsciousness)
It is worth the extra money to have an anesthetist with you, to monitor your vital signs and get you very sedated SAFELY. In the US, dentists sometimes give anesthesia, but they're concentrating on your teeth, not on the rest of you. Anesthesia is very safe, when it is administered by a doctor trained to do it. (Residency trained, not weekend course trained!)
Good luck to you!

IV sedation is the Sh*t. I loved it for getting my teeth pulled for dentures. I was there one minute, they stuck me with a needle in the arm, 30 seconds later i was out. Then woke up a couple hours later having them help me put my jacket on and kicking me out the door with my new dentures. They will numb your gums after you are already out. I don't know if you have insurance or not, but if you do, check to see if medical will cover the IV sedation, mine did, I go through Blue Cross Blue Shield, they covered 80% of it for me. Don't worry, IV sedation is awesome and you won't regret getting it if you do.

Go to an oral surgeon. It can be done in his office but with the proper equipment. I have seen it done and with no complications. Get a recommendation for an oral surgeon first. I hope you are having immediate dentures or transitional partials put in after wards. No you will not be aware of what's going on either.
Remember to get that recommendation. Bring someone with you so they can take you home.

I had my wisdom teeth taken out under general anesthesia because one of them was in my bone so they had to cut away at the bone, and I couldnt stand it. So I had laughing gas and some intravenus sedation. It was fine I was gone, gone gone, although I realize that being under, makes me sick, so when they say dont eat, really dont eat becuase they may not realize you threw up and you can choke.

The IV will be in your hand or fore arm. Yes, you will feel that part but it is very brief. Yes, you are completely out, not unconscious, you can still maintain your own airway, breath on your own, but you will be unaware of anything going on.
