My ex was pretty dodgy like that. At first I stuck around because I liked the fire - I'd been stagnant and feeling nothing for so long, it was nice to feel anything at all. Then I started thinking that the first relationship is where you make all the mistakes, and that this guy was so rotten I could make all the mistakes I liked and he deserved it. That, and everyone around me had rotten relationships too, and it looked like it didn't get much better than that. Then I found I just didn't like the person I was becoming, able to hit my partner and enjoy it (he started it, by the way - I wouldn't dream of hitting a decent guy). So I left and never looked back.
My advice is never to enter a relationship expecting the other person to change (my ex wanting me to change - of all things - was where most of our arguments started). It just doesn't work.

I used to be a female cop and had to see women do this daily.
Most of them simply don't want to be alone or don't have the finances (without his) to keep up a household. Divorce takes a while- and can be expensive- especially from a guy w/ that kind of track record, and how do you live? Much less provide stuff for your kids- clothes, lunches, presents for them, or for b-day parties they may want to go to, co-pays, gas, food, bills, diapers (maybe) rent...yeh- the guy may suck, but if he does work he contributes more than she would have without him...
Are YOU ready to take care of her? Do you know why she hasn't asked for help from her family- Usually pride gets in the way of her asking for help- Given that there is anyone in the position to help- (space, money, time, etc...)
Pray for her and be a friend- When the time comes, tell her about places (You can be educating yourself about ) like Family & children services, WIC, welfare to work, local churches (will sometimes help with food or money, emergency shelters, etc .

You mentioned a family. So that can be part of it. And some people just stay in something bad because they know nothing else and are scared of what else there could be, not realizing nothing is sometimes better than something...instead of the other way around!

We hang on hoping that the light will come on and he will turn into a wonderful caring human being until all the hope finally dies. Part of it may be that we're unwilling to let ourselves admit we made a big mistake and believe there's someone out there who is decent and we can make it on our own.
