I'm a Senior in high school (I know I still have a while before I get in the *real* world). I have a disability that was not from an accident. It was congenital (meaning not Genetic.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spina_bifida#Spina_bifida_occulta . And on a whim I was searching around for peoples opinions on dating people in wheelchairs.
I am extremely active and don't have and "mental side effects" that people who *lose* the ability to walk (opposed to never having it at all) have. As in no self pity. (actually for being in a chair for my whole life it feels "normal" to be in a wheelchair. Just as walking feels normal to able bodied people.

I am concerned with how women immediately assume that men in my position need care taking. I am %100 capable of taking care of my self. Is this an immediate assumption with all women or just misinformed ones?
I guess my real question is how much of a chance do I have now and in the future with women? Would you ever date someone in my position?

I would. I mean, personality is what counts, right? But theres a bunch of girl that woulden't want to. But why would you wanna be with them if they base everything on appearence?

Im probably going to tell you something that you dont want to hear, but it is the sad truth. People of both genders are scared to death of disabled people because they think they are taking on a huge responsibility. Half of the time, they do not even bother to realize that physical and mental disabilities are seperate. I think this is human nature. Until youve experienced it, you dont know what it is like. Plus being with a disabled person is a bit of a culture shock at first. But once that wears off the person can get the idea that you or anyone else disabled is completely "normal".

Now as to will you find a woman? Unfortunately you have to work extra hard to make her see that you are independent. Something that I learned a LONG time ago is go out and do things and dont get wrapped up in wether or not you have a girl. Because if you do the things you love, you will eventually find a girl doing those same things. i hope this helps.

I wouldn't find the fact that someone relies on a wheelchair a problem at all. Once someone gets to know you, for who you are and what you are interested in, it sounds as though they'll realize you are independent and completely capable of living life how you want without help from others. Respect and admiration are just first steps to greater feelings for another person. I see no troubles with you being able to engage a woman's heart just as she would yours.

No, because it's too crowded with two people in a wheelchair.

Yeah, i definitely would. There is absolutely no problem with being in a wheelchair. There is no way that I wouldn't date somebody just because they are in a wheelchair. Don't let your situation bring you down. Be yourself : )
