The most impressive property of thiols, also called mercaptans, is their odour. Skunk scent is composed of 1-butanethiol and (E)-2-butene-1-thiol, and small amounts of other thiols (perhaps one of (E)-2-butenyl methyl disulfide or (E)-2-butenyl thioacetate).

There are a half dozen organic compounds, most based on sulfur. The most common and characteristic (by odor) is butyl mercaptan, CH3CH2CH2CH2-SH.
