It's generally harmless. It's that awful seal-bark cough. If it flares, run the hot shower, steam up the bathroom (we're talking sauna-like) and let the kids hang out in the bathroom for a little while. The steam sometimes opens up their breathing passages and eases the cough. If that doesn't cut it, bundle them up, and take them outside -the cold helps too.
If your child wheezes or retracts (you can see their ribs when they're inhaling) or has ANY problems getting a good breath, you need to seek medical help ASAP.

Oh my goodness, it's heartbreaking, isn't it? My kids have all had it at some point. The best thing you can do is to keep them calm. If they get too upset the coughing will get worse and they can have a hard time breathing. Humidity seems to help as well. If you don't have a humidifier, take them in the bathroom and run a super hot shower. Keep them in there and let them breathe the steam for a few minutes at a time. It's an old wives tale, sure, but 3 kids later, I can tell you it works.
Good luck with your kids. I hope they feel better!

theres a 3 day steriod called predinosol....ask your childrens pediatritian about it. it's very good and although it's strong, it doesn't hurt them. They can only take it for three days straight, and the shower steam helps as well. by the fourth day, they should be breathing easily. good luck
