Well, depends on how far a person is going to offend you. I would try to ignore it and hold strong like it doesn't bother you. Often times when a mean person gets a reaction it fuels their fire to say or do more mean things. NEVER sink to their level and say another racist remark back...it only makes you just as guilty. If it's in an office or school setting perhaps you can speak up to the management.

Racist remark are a reflection of the narrow mindedness of the person that makes the remark. And not on the person on whom is is aimed.
Be good be nice

Ignore them.
If they're trying to get a rise out of you, you can simply say something like "that's not funny." Don't get mad - people who make remarks like that are looking for a reaction.
If you're with someone and they say something that offends you, again, a simple "that's not funny" has always been effective for me. If I'm questioned as to why I don't think a racist remark is funny, I'll simply say, "I'm sorry. I hate to be such a prude, but things like that are offensive to me." End of sentence.

If it's a racist remark said on an internet forum or chat room, usually it's meant to be provocative. Don't bother responding to it because no matter what you say he/she probably will not stop, especially if he/she knows it hit a nerve. If you are in an online argument/debate and someone insults you (racial or otherwise) only respond to his/her argument and feign obliviousness to the insult.

Wore a kilt for years in the military, when face with mormon remarks would often say do it again I will use what I wear under the kilt on him. Then tell him to look down. We all ear a skein dhu (dagger) in our socks.
BTW no one ever made a wisecrack when I was also wearing my sword. (could cut a man in half)
BUT some idiots did when wearing a loaded pistol
Just remember they are idiots not worth any bother.

Being polite does NOT mean that you should tolerate unacceptable behavior. If somebody makes a racist remark, I make it known on no uncertain terms that the remark was unacceptable.

Depends on how far they go. Don't show them that it got to you by reacting. Thats just what they wanted. A reaction. Once they see that they can't get to you by the remarks they will move on.

What's your definition of racist??? You see, today's biggest barrier to our finding common ground is that people use these inflammatory words like racist to describe everything, even events that aren't racist at all. Frankly, I'm tired of hearing about it. Describe to me the situation or the remark, and I can comment intelligently, otherwise, please be extremely discriminatory in your use of the word.

Ignore them if it's a passerby. Change the subject or respond with something on a positive non-racial subject if you are in a conversation. Repeat as necessary.
