I'm not trying to be gross. Why do they float? Most people float in water and I know muscular people have a harder time that bigger individuals. Is it because they are composed of fatty material?

Turds, like everything else, follow Archimedes' rule that something will float if it is less dense than the water it displaces. Your turd will sink into water until it displaces the exact amount of water that would weigh what it does. If, when completely immersed, your turd still weighs more than the water is displaces, then it's denser than water and will sink.

Extra bonus info: This is also why masses, including turds, have different buoyancies in different liquids. Salt water, for example, has increased density due to the salt particles dissolved in it; a turd would have to sink into salt water less deep before the displaced water weighed as much as it did. Therefore, things float easier in salt water (but don't waste your table salt in the toilet playing Mr. Wizard!).

Floatation is often the result of density discrepancey. In this case, its likely the "turds" are less dense than water (1g/ml). It's possible that there is some hydrophobic (fat/water) interactions. But if you watched the "turd" in water for a few minutes, you'd notice that it would start to absorb water and gradually sink as it started to approach, and equallize with, the density of the water.

Almost anything will float as long as it does not weigh more than the water it displaces. Did you ever see a barge made out of cement? I once threw a piece of glass into water,it landed flat on the surface and floated. It would have sunk if it landed on edge.

If the stool contains a lot of fat from either a fatty or a digestive problem where the person does not absorb fats well then the stool will float.

The stuff that floats has a stronger fat content fabric than the stuff that sinks. So, in case you consume a great variety of fatty meals, you get the frothy, floaty stuff. scent, nicely, it relies upon on what you consume. specific meals have chemical compounds which launch a great variety of sulfur compounds in the time of digestion, which finally ends up in smellier poo.

not always - summarised by the quote:
"are you a floater or a sinker?"

it depends on the material it is composed of and the amount of water and fibre that bind the materials together
