Because mean is relative...
Sometimes what is just honest can be considered mean. But if it is true, why be offended?
Especially by the hoards of prozac eating, politically correct overly sensitive, "walk on egg shells for me so I don't cry" kinds of people.... Which I usually find in my personal experience, to be nothing more than maniuplative and sneaky indivisuals that know no better way of defending themselves than to back away and join at the hip with all the others like them who take offense at whatever the "club" find offensive that week. and believe me, when they ban together and attack... mean doesn't quite ever cover what they say and do... but because they were politically correct, they were also justified. The mob rules attitudes that go acepted in society today are worse by far. I prefer a good direct tongue lashing to a drag through the politically correct mud anyday!
That... to me... is mean!
They are only words... shake it off and move along!

Many, not all, but many people who share unsavory remarks or rude answers are not happy with themselves or with life. When someone says something that they recognize, but can't answer intelligently, they spout off like crazy...pardon the pun.
Your questions may be a good opportunity to learn and share with others, but those who don't know the answers either guess or give wisecracks attempting to make the asker feel inferior. Don't you dare feel that way! They aren't smart enough or tough enough to bring you down.
If you remain silent, but realize who is wrong for speaking rudely online, YOU will be the one with self respect and honor. Then, you will always be in the right!
Bless you always

Many people have self esteem issues. So thier only means to feel good about themselves is to belittle somebody else. Unable to obtain necessary self esteem from achievement they revel in any percieved failure by another. The most obvious of these are teenagers who somehow think they will be percieved as cool by downing others or who's sole pleasure since they lack real knowledge of thier own is to disrupt other's attempts to gain knowledge. It also brings them attention. Remember for the insecure even negitive attention is better than being ignored.

Because they are insecure and need to feel better about themselves, or they enjoy hurting other people's feelings. The latter group should be fed to the wolves (not to be mean), lol.

Its easy to be mean when you are not face to face with a person. Cowards probably wouldn't say it to your face. Some folks are just mean and like to cause more pain. Just toughen your skin and remember they are fools.

The technical term for people who do this online is "flaming". They get their jollies creating havoc and mischief at other people's expense.

because they haven't the manners, respect or intelligence to treat people decently.... just think what a sad life they must have, and the only fun they think they get is by being obnoxious.

I think its because the believe it makes them look like a bigshot, cool or important when they can demean others. A little childish and probably very insecure people.

because people have nothing better to do with their time, and it makes them feel better about themselves to cut other people down, but little do they know they are just a**holes- and I am sorry to say, but Santa will not bring them anything this year--
