You should be able to right click on the icon to get a menu that gives you a choice to delete the shortcut. It sound like it's an invalid shortcut because the program may have been deleted or moved. First go into the Control Panel to Add/Remove Programs and see if the program is there for the shortcut that's on the desktop. If it is, remove the program from here first. That action may also remove the shortcut on the desktop. If the program is not there, go ahead and do what I first suggested.

You should be able to drag and drop a useless icon into your recycle bin.

Any program requiring a working shortcut will be found in your start menu .. you can right click on the program if it's there and select "create shortcut" or "copy to desktop" to put a working shortcut on the desktop.

Right click on the icon
Left click on Delete

This only removes the icon. It does not remove the process it points to.

If you know what it should be a shortcut to you can edit the link to get to the program.
that's right click -> properties-> find target and you modify the link above "find target"
Otherwise just hit delete when the shortcut is selected

If you could not delete it , then try to uninstall it if its programme is not essential for the running of your desktop. Otherwise you may have to employ the service of an antiviral software or a registry cleaner.
