Kudos to you for not rushing to the doctor to have your child put on antibiotics.
Lizzie G is correct. It seems so simple that it's hard to believe it will actually work, but it does. Use warm water and a pinch of salt. You don't need it real salty.
Don't bother with the Sepacol spray or lozenges; even adults find those difficult to tolerate [taste-wise].
I would add
- Milkshakes [Check with your child before you give them chocolate though. Sometimes chocolate hurts a sore throat.] Smoothies made with plain yogurt included would be especially good. [Plain, not vanilla, not fat-free or low-fat. Just plain. But you can add the vanilla yogurt to the plain yogurt.]
- A vaporizer may help, especially if the air in your house is dry. Or a hot steamy shower or bath.
- Any kind of hard candy that your kid likes and wants. The hard candy will help them product saliva and keep their mouth and throat moisturized. [Cavities be damned for tonight.]
- Your time and undivided attention a bit more often than usual [especially hugs and snuggles.]

My doctor has always told me to take Tylenol for pain relief from sore throats. Drinking some herbal teas can also be helpful, but you really have to check with the doc to see if they are safe for your child to drink (no allergies, etc.). A humidifier also works wonders along with drinking a great deal of water (the doc said other fluids can be irritating). I would be very careful when treating children....a visit to the doctor will likely prove beneficial. You really have to be certain that an infection is not spreading through vital organs.

As long as you are sure that you aren't dealing with strep, because it can stop causing sore throat symptoms and then spread to heart or kidney's if untreated. You could get some throat lozenges and give them Tylenol and pop cycles or warm but not hot chocolate or ice cream. Have them gargle with warm salt water. I hope they feel better.
