Because we're too lenient - & we also count time spent waiting for trial as part of the actual sentence - so 20 years minus 1 year in prison waiting for trial = 19 years sentence.
Plus, our jails are so full, we can't keep them in for long, cos the next lot will be coming in soon.

A life sentence means that you will be subject to a custodial sentence for the rest of your life. However, prisoners in the UK generally do not serve the whole of their custodial sentences in prison; a least a portion is served in the community "on licence". This means that they are subject to the supervision of the Probation Service and have certain restrictions on their liberty, such as having to let the police and Probation Service know where they are living, not being able to travel abroad, and maybe other things related to their offending (e.g. not to go near or make contact with their victim, to receive drug treatment, or to live in a probation hostel). In the case of "lifers", they are on life licence and will have to report to the probation service, although not always very frequently, indefinitely.
At the time of sentencing, the judge makes a statemnt about the minimum period of the sentence which must be served in prison - this is called "the tariff". So, in your example, a person may be told that they are sentenced to life imprisonment, and must serve a minimum of 25 years. After this point, they may apply for parole, and the Parole Board considers their case, looking at the level of risk they pose to the public, how they have behaved in prison, what courses or therapy they have undertaken, etc. They then make a decision whether to release on life licence or not. If someone was considered dangerous enough, their parole could be refused each time they apply and they could spend the whole of their life in prison.

In general a "standard" life sentence in the UK is 15 years sentence, from which you can be considered for parole after serving 1/3rd of your sentence (providing you have been a model prisoner). However a judge (depending in what court you are sentenced in and on what charge) can invoke a "minimum" length before the sentenced person can apply for parole. The crux of the matter here is should life mean life?

Life sentence is a joke in the UK. I think the shortest is 18 years (even if its 25) you can still be released after 2/3 of your sentence, minus a bit for good behaviour.

existence will possibly no longer mean precisely what it says yet based on three solutions right here those sentenced to existence could adhere to strict situations and that they are suited in asserting that they could be recalled at every time. What I disagree with approximately existence sentences although is the reality with 2 specific offences can convey approximately this with none evidence. in assessment to this lady who has probable had scientific interest and different evidence to help her declare.i.e photographic and eye witness, there are 2 offences that require NO evidence. One being homicide. You don,t prefer a physique for that.the different Rape. The be conscious of yet another is all this is mandatory and could be supported via hearsay, which has the flair to be abused.i.e mendacity on oath. Now i understand there's a jury to be sure on guilt in the progression of a no longer to blame plea yet even they are not infallible.actual there's a presumption of to blame until proved harmless in Rape cases. additionally,it would not be unparalleled for our so called judicial equipment to pass incorrect.seem on the cases of Sean Hodgkinson ,Stephan Kizko and Sally Clark to call some and what does that enable you to already know? No,I in simple terms think of each so often except there is absolute evidence somebody has dedicated such offences ,handing down existence sentences to intend existence is in simple terms to plenty.we could face it ,how might you sense in case you have been nailed for a homicide on the flimsiest evidence and no physique.in case you knew you didn,t dedicate the homicide and have been convicted on the capability of that ,might you heavily think of which you deserve existence? you probable gained,t think of so and then there is the query of being falsely accused of Rape. How might you sense in case you have been falsely accused of Rape and hence convicted for a criminal offense you knew you probably did no longer dedicate?.returned, you're able to nicely be convicted with none evidence different than the be conscious of yet another. As hearsay has the ability to be abused i.e mendacity on oath and a jury will possibly no longer get to pay attention each little thing by way of way the criminal equipment works.there's conceivable of being wrongly convicted of a criminal offense you knew you probably did no longer dedicate. As Rape can entice a existence sentence,it is not a great prospect to be dealing with once you already know you have no longer dedicated the crime and could absolutely everyone particularly say that they might nonetheless say existence could mean existence in those situations.? i think of no longer.

Hopefully the UK government will realise that by letting the criminals out sooner, than they should, they are responsible for what they do. Instead of blaming the people.
