ACLU supporters would say that they are neutral on Christmas. The fact is they are very anti religion if the religion is in any way associated with the government. The ACLU zealously prosecutes any instance of public funding or endorsement of anything vaguely religious. Examples include their filing of the following types of lawsuits:
A) To change the name of towns named after saints (believe it or not, they've done it)
B) suing to terminate a lease between a municipality and a local boy scout orginization that had existed for decades. The city let the scouts lease unused public lands for the purpose of camping for a very small amount of money. The scouts had improved the property over the course of years into quite a nice campground. The ACLU held out that since the boy scout creed cites belief in a "higher being" than they were a religous orginization therefore the city could not give the scouts preferential treatment.
C) Filing suits to ban organized prayer in public schools.
I could go on to Z and start over at AA.
The stated goal of the ACLU is to guard the freedoms guaranteed under the constitution. They are however very picky when it comes to which freedoms they intend to uphold. As far as religion is concerned, the ACLU would prefer a completely secular society.

The viewpoint of the ACLU is that "freedom of religion" is to be respected. The problem arises when one religion, usually Christianity, is given precedence over others. You have every right to worship as you like as long as you don't deny the rights of others to do the same.
I have no problem (being a Christian) saying "Merry Christmas" to my Christian friends and "Happy Holidays" to my non-Christian friends. It's called respect. The problem arises when any religion demands that you make others - either by force, coercion, or "majority rule" - follow along or pay for your religious display, as in the case of town-sponsored Christmas displays.
No one wants to undermine Christmas. People seems more than willing to try and undermine the pagan Winter Solstice celebration and Saturnalia, though. Majority rule is only beneficial and equitable if you are in the majority. The ACLU looks out for those who are not.

The ACLU has, for more than 10 years, rampaged on Christmas, by suing Municipalities for having nativity scenes.
It has been a gradual thing, but I saw it in public schools in the 80's.
Coragryph: Try to sell that to me. I spent a year of high school going to court b/c the ACLU and the Nebraska EA tried to shut down the Christian school I attended. They lost, but I lost 10th grade.
Tequila: I don't know what Constitution you are referring to, but it isn't the one in the US. Nothing in the C says anything about "recognizing all religions." Crock of the day.
Call it hate, if that's how open your mind is to another opinion. Freedom from religion is not "recognizing all religions." I have a law degree, and con-law is my specialty, Christian civil rights, in particular. Have a nice day.
I'm also a defense attorney, so what would you expect?

If people actually look, they will see that these attacks come not from Muslims as so many like to blame, but from bleeding heart caucasians that feel that they must stop their own culture for the sake of others.
I have worked as a Santa Claus and I never had any problems with Muslims. Only from puritan Christian's and Jews.

The ACLU would like all religions recognized as would the constitution. Since this is impossible to do on public owned property with public funds, the rule is to keep it in the private sector.
No one is being forced out of their holiday celebrations, but as a public you cannot insist that your celebrations be honored even if you are the majority.
And speaking of majority, Christianity doesn't need protection, your protection comes from the large number of Americans that are Christian, no one is trying to take that away. The constitution amendment is to protect the few, not the masses, the few are the most vulnerable to discrimination. It has always been this way.
So don't worry, say Merry Christmas, but keep it in the private sector. The public sector is just that, public, it belongs to everyone.
And Merry Christmas by the way and if you like you can wish me a Happy Winter Solstice. However you wish Holiday greetings upon your fellows, just do it with peace and love in your heart, which is what EVERY religion is trying to promote. And if I want your particular religion I'll go to your church, in the private sector.
Peace.
OH MY!!! There certainly is a lot of hatred in here tonight. So much for the peace and love that Christmas is SUPPOSED to represent. Geez.
THE CONSTITUTION CLEARLY STATES
FREEDOM OF RELIGION.
WHICH ALSO MEANS FREEDOM FROM RELIGION.
Put down the King James version of the bible long enough to pick up a text book, preferably one on CONSTITUTIONAL LAW.
Peace.

I fail to see where the ACLU is any threat to my right to celebrate Christmas. I see nothing but baseless hysteria from the haters of the ACLU.

their civil liberties? yea, they can say whatever they want but they are using YOUR tax dollars to pay for their lawsuits to take ever form of religion out of this country. Not just govt but the entire country. This is taking away OUR civil rights. The american criminal liberties union should all be deported from this country for treason. Do some research.
and I dont agree with religion but I understand rights.

They don't, and they're not. It's yet another smear campaign. Happens every year.
The ACLU protects the rights of private individuals to express their religion, and protects the rights of individuals against government sponsored religious displays. That's the law, and has been for a long time.
All the ACLU does is ensure the law gets fairly applied to all.
It's really rather tragic that so many people believe it's wrong to force the government to obey the law, just because they don't happen to be in the minority group that gets discriminated against.

They are a classic example of the wolf in sheep`s clothing. They fool you into thinking they are for our rights, but they as a single organization have succeeded in taking away more religious freedoms than any known organization. Why should they be allowed more rights than me or any other citizen?
