for the past 3 days & nights (until12:20 AM) my downstairs
neighbor has been playing their music SO loud that I can hear & feel the bass through the walls !
I can't blast mine back even though I'd like to, due to the other neighbors , I can't stand it !
I'd go & talk to them about it, but I'm afraid this will just make them rebel & they will do it even more.
Should I call the police about it or do you have a better
solution ?
PLEAE HELP ! & THANKS a bunch !

If you want less confrontation or anger about the situation....I would write them a letter and post it on the door anonymously. Tell them how you feel but don't get angry. See if anything changes. If they rebel....you have already given them a chance. Call the cops. But be a nice neighbor and tell them first.

Have you had these neighbors for a while and this is the first time this has happened? Do you know them? Does something seem to have changed? The answers to these questions make a difference.

Bringing up a problem with a neighbor is never easy, but you do need to confront it. My first thought would be to approach them and see if you can broach the subject with them. If they seem approachable, ask if they are on vacation this week because you have noticed that they seem to be up later at night, or something like that. If they say yes, laugh and say that you noticed that they were enjoying very loud music. They may immediately say, "Oh, sorry if it disturbed you." Sometimes people don't realize that the sound travels so well through walls and ceilings.

I wouldn't consider police unless you think there is really no other option, and I wouldn't be surprised if they may not want to get involved unless your community has a noise bylaw. If at all possible you woud want to maintain good relationships with your neighbors. Do you know their next door neighbors? Or others who might be bothered by the music? If so, there might be a way to get together and decide on a plan. The more people who are being bothered, the more likely that there can be a quick solution.

My sympathies are with you for sure. I would find the situation very difficult and I don't know if I would have been able to listen to it for three nights without doing something. I guess the most important thing is to not "do something" when you are angry. Try to approach them when it is quiet and you are calm.

This link has a bit of insight into the problem. I hope it is resolved soon. Best of luck with it.

You do need to talk to them otherwise you will never get any peace! Go to them and do not be belligerent but tell them you would appreciate it very much if they would not play their music so loud. At this juncture bringing the police into the situation could cause more problems in the long run that just loud music. If you have to tell them several more times and they still do nothing then you have no choice but to call the police...that way you know that you did everything possible. Go the diplomatic route first and see if that gets results...
Good luck!

The police are often worthless, and not much you can do when police do not help stop them... if you try to make them stop then the victim gets into trouble... this country is totally screwed up.... I wish the police would do their job... we have an asshole near us who plays some really crappy banging sound type music, and can play it until early morning after the whole night.. it is so loud it can be heard from 500 feet! Some people just need to be exterminated they have no clue how they make other people miserable!

Sorry - don't agree with many of the comments made. If tour neighbours are so insensitive as to play music so loud at an unacceptable time, you can safely assume their response to a polite question will not be equally polite. In the UK it's suggested that you tape the noise, ideally get a witness to confirm the timing, and give the council your evidence so they can slap a noise abatement order on them. I pity you - this is a sign of society's ongoing decay I feel.

Is there already contention between you and the neighbors? If not, what will it hurt to try to talk with them? Tell them that you like music too, and it's obvious they have a super sound system, but after 11:00 you're trying to settle in for the night because you need to get up in the morning to go to work, school, whatever. Maybe suggest that sometime y'all could get together for a party and share your music. Be neighborly. I think calling the cops will make them more rebellious because they will know it was SOMEBODY in the building, so they'll find ways to bother EVERYBODY in the future if the cops get involved.

Kill em with kindness--peace and understanding work wonders if people have the guts to try it.

Do you live in an apartment building? If so, the landlord will just tell you to call the police. That is exactly what I would do. Confronting them will only anger them - they have no compassion, or they wouldn't be playing it so loud at that hour. Call them every time they do it - follow up, and the police will nip it

I definetely would not call the police until you have gone and talked to your neighbours. If it's bothering you, especially if it's excessively loud, you really should go over and talk to them. Say that you understand that they like their music loud, but it is disrupting you. It wouldn't be that big of a deal if it was once in awhile, but 3 nights in a row is just too much. Be very polite and do not try and be accusing. If they rebel and get angry and only turn the music up louder, than it's time to call the cops. But definetely talk to them first

If your living in an apartment you should call the landlord or whatever company manages the building. When you signed the lease it is expected you can and will get reasonable peace for enjoyment in your place. Try not to have any interaction with them. This is the landlords duty. Plus this make is anonymous as they don't know who tattled on them.

After 10:00 PM, if they're playing their music that loud, they are disturbing the peace.

Call the police, and make an "anonymous" phone call that there's a party going on.
