I've signed mine for the last 5 years that way. Sometimes it is "Best Regards" and sometimes (more informally) it is just "Best". It means Best... wishes, regards, luck, fortune, etc... a nice way to sign off without saying "Sincerely" or "Yours Truly" since those don't always apply!

I've seen e-mails with "Best" for at least the last few years. It seems friendlier than the formal "Sincerely," but more professional than the personal "Love,".

I assume it is a shortened form of the old business closing, "Best Regards".

It never did. It shows a lack of vocabulary and imagination.
If you MUST use a one-word closing, please choose from "Sincerely," "Regards," or "Love," depending on the type of letter and formality involved.
