There are many factors to consider. Such as how much can you afford? Can you afford the vet bills/food/worming/flea treatments of a large dog? The bigger the dog the more these things cost. Also do you have children? Will you be having children in the future?

How much exercise can you *honestly* give the dog. Do you want a dog that will protect you? Or a dog that loves everyone.

My suggestion to you would be to go to: http://animal.discovery.com/breedselector/dogselectorindex.do and answer the questions there, that site will help you pick the best dog breed for you. Once you've done that, contact breeders and get some info. Research the breed on the net/through books and I'd really recommend going to dog shows too.

If you're not after a purebred then consider getting a rescue dog from your local shelter/dog pound.

Just make sure that you're realistic when answering the questions about what you want out of a dog. It's all too easy to say "I'll walk the dog every day for two hours" and never actually do it, which will only result in a bored destructive dog.

Some breeds live for almost 20 years, it's incredibly important to do your research before you make such a long commitment!

A good dog is one that fits into your lifestyle. Do not get a dog based on looks or because others have a particular breed and they think their breed is the best. You have to evaluate your life style (income and activity level) honestly and then research the many different breeds. Many dogs end up in the city pounds and shelters because people get this cute little puppy and then find out it is too much for them, not what they expected, or too large, too hyper etc... The Akc website has breed descriptions and it also tells you the temperament of the breeds as well. You could also read books on different breeds such as Idiots guide To Choosing, Buying And Raising A Dog. Know the breeds and their temperaments before you decide because getting a dog is a responsibility you will have for the life of the dog. You have a choice, the dog does not, so choose wisely. Good Luck!!!

that depends on whether you are looking for a small or big dog....cocker spaniels, malamuts, lab's and retrievers make great pets if you have children.

If you don't have kids and want a big dog a german shepard would be a good choice.

But would suggest getting from a breeder, not a pet store. Also you need to be careful of dogs that you get at the local pound...you don't know their background and they may have been abused which would mean they may have bad habits that would be hard to break.

Well, I'll put it to you "this" way. I've had 3 Labradors in my life now, and "all" 3 of them have stolen my heart. The one in my life now is a female Lab, and she's smart as a whip! She was potty trained by the time she was 4 months old, and at 5 months, she was bringing me my "matching" shoes when she wanted to go outside to go potty. When she was 1 year old, I had trained her to open the refridgerater door with a cloth I had tied to it, and she'd reach in and get my husband a soda, which was in a cooley cup, bring it to him, and go back and shut the fridg. door with her nose! She is well mannered, funny, loves to fetch, protective, and calm most of the time. I wouldn't trade her for a million bucks! Labradors never forget that you love them, and they always love you back. Just remember one thing, "whatever" breed you get? They will be as smart as you "treat" them. Good luck.

A mutt from a local rescue or humane society is the very best dog you could find. One of a kind, and picked according to your specifications - could you ask for anything more?
