Take the pictures with you. Explain to the judge what happened. Don't argue or give any indication that you do other than worship the judge. Many have developed gigantic heads over the years and will give you a contempt of court citation on just a whim.
A lot depends on where you are, and what type of person the judge hates.
Never argue.

In Georgia where I'm a cop, there are strict rules about handicap parking laws. First, the space has to be marked with both reflective ground markings and signs warning the driver. But there is a glitch still in the law. Those rules only apply to new or refurbished spaces. If an owner of a business does not want to upgrade his parking spaces, then you can still get a ticket for parking there even if the space is not signed or painted well. Just because you get a ticket does not make you guilty. In Georgia is $110 for the first offense, $220 for the second, and $550 for the third and beyond offenses. Check with your state laws first before you make a fool out of yourself in open court. Just go to your local library and research the law for yourself. Look up case law for your state and see if there are any cases similar to yours. If there are, copy the cases and bring them to court with you. A good judge always admires defendants who "do their homework" and present a well defended case. If your laws are similar, and most states law are very similar, then make sure you check on the status of the business, as in the cases in Georgia. As for automatically dismissing the case, some judges do, and some judges don't. Some judges take the case under advisement from another attorney, or they research the laws for themselves and rule on the case at a later time.

Maybe. It would be best if you take pictures under similar lighting and weather conditions. A video would be even better.
It depends a lot upon state law. CA, for example, has pretty strict rules on the marking of handicapped parking spaces. You'll need to bring references to the applicable law with you and show the court that the markings were not in accordance with the laws or regulations as well as the fact that whatever was there was not clearly visible.
Nothing is "automatic". You have to build your case and then as for a verdict of Not Guilty.

In addition to your pictures you already took, make sure you take pictures of the spot in a similar condition to when you parked there. If you live/work there then you will also have to prove that you were not aware that it was ever a Handicap spot. Some traffic judges will hold a case like that over for a jury. You must plead Not Guilty. If you plead Guilty, he will just hand down sentence. If you plead No Contest...he will hand down a lesser sentence. I say go with Not Guilty.

In the state of Connecticut, there must be both a sign posted, and markings on the ground for it to be a legal handicap parking spot!

You should bring in the pictures and I would suggest that you contact the local authority responsible for painting the sign and have them provide you with proof of when the sign was last painted and it's current condition. If they won't provide you with this get a letter from them on their city stationary stating that you were there for that purpose. You'll probably get a dismissal or reduction but nothing is automatic.

Take the picture with you and plead not guilty, but if you lose the case in court, You have to pay the ticket and court costs also. This could be in the hundreds of dollars.

Fighting a ticket does not always get the ticket dismissed. However, you have nothing to lose by showing up, pleding not guilty and pleding your case. The pictures will be helpful in proving your case as long as you have views from all angles. Good Luck...
