A SIM card (Subscriber Identity Module) is basically a computer chip that stores your subscriber or cell phone number on it. The SIM allows your service provider to send your phone calls and text messages to your specific location. A SIM card can also store information like your personal contact list. Hope that helps!!! :)

The SIM is a small computer and some memory. It holds a unique identifier called an IMSI. It does not store your cell phone number - this is obtained from your Home Location Register (HLR) when you turn your phone on.

The SIM also contains a cryptographic key that cannot be accessed. A copy of this key is stored in the HLR. The key is used to encrypt the channel over the air.

The IMSI identifies your account, so when you put the SIM in a different phone, your account moves with it.

The memory in the SIM card can also be used to store your contact lists, SMSs etc
