The Haunting of Alazabel Cray.
It was so creepy. It's about a deadly Cult, A teenage monster hunter, Monsters that eat babies and steal peoples souls right out of their living body, A sacraficial girl, A Serial killer that hunts down women on the street called Stitch-Face, Two Horrors that will follow you and kill you if you look back three times, and a massive conspiracy to use Monsters and Demons to rule the world!
It was the one and only book that I was up at two in the morning reading because I was so engrossed in the story to put it down and I was afraid to stop and go to sleep because I was afraid Stitch-Face would appear in my room and carve his name in my chest!
It gave me nightmares for a week after finnishing it but it was so good that i'm reading it again even though it was terrifing!
The book sucks you in, swishes you around, chews on your bones, spits you out and invites you in for more!

I don't know of any unbelievably scary ones but Stephen King has some good ones that are kind of creepy.
The Shining, Carrie, The Tommyknockers, The Talisman, Pet Sematary

Red Dragon by Thomas Harris (the same guy who authored Silence of the Lambs - also scary.)
Here's a reader's review from the link below:
"The character of the killer is extremely unsettling, the story just perfect ( written well before the era of serial killers in litterature) and the page turning frenzy at its peak."

I must recommend, as I do anytime anyone wants a good scare, the short stories of M R James. They made me afraid to go to bed in case there was something under it and afraid to turn my head in case there was something at the window.
You can usually find cheap copies in the UK and according to Amazon.com, in the US. A public library might have them and they're on Project Gutenberg for free. Casting the Runes, Count Magnus, Oh Whistle and I'll come to you my lad. You rarely get to see the horror but by hell you feel it.

Go to crimelibrary.com. They have very detailed online accounts of famous crimes throughout history. They are subdivided into chapters, and most of them are so scary because you know they are true- they will chill you to the bone but you just can't stop reading. The best stories are the ones about Jeffrey Dahmer and the true Amityville Horror story.

The author H.P. Lovecraft wrote a lot of good and scary short stories. Among them are "Herbert West:Re-Animator," "At the Mountains of Madness," and "The Colour Out of Space."
