Hi! Just wanted to say I had the very same problem with my Chihuahua not long ago!!!! The reason dogs will eat cat food and cat poop is because of the high protein levels. When a cat eats its food the protein levels will stay the same even after it poops. The scary thing is my dog almost died about 2 months ago from this. It will cause severe intestial bleeding. If the animal is not treated right away it will die. I actually put a baby gate on my stair case so the dog can't get up there. I put all of the cats stuff up there...... litterbox, food, and water. Also, I put the cat food up high on a desk so if the dog comes up there he can't eat it. As far litter boxes go I bought a Litter Maid cat box. It has an automatic trap for waste so the dog can't help himself. I really hope this helps you and your dog!!!!

If you could keep the litterbox in a room where the dog can't go, maybe put it in a seperate room and put a baby gate up. Some dogs will just eat poop, dog poop, cat poop, etc. Also try to keep the poop cleaned out of the litterbox.

The breed is Chihuahua.

I have a 6 month old Jack Russell Terrier pup that liked to do the same thing....(we have a covered liter box, she would climb all the way in it, and we couldn't find her)!!! When we did find her....we scolded her just as we would if she went potty on the floor, and put her in her pen for a time out.......took some time...but she eventually quit doing it....she gets in trouble if she even goes in the same room the liter box is in (it's in the bathroom...nothing in there she needs).....if she heads off in that direction, we call her name in a firm tone, and she turns around and comes back....they can be taught it's a no no.......

p.s. I have a 9 year old beagle that used to do the same thing...so, your not in this alone...it's a dog thing! Can't tell ya why they do it.....

Just put the poop out of her reach. Won't bother the cat any, or use a baby gate.

Sprinkle crushed red peper on the cat poop, once your dog gets a taste of that she wont go near it.

nothing to worry about - it is natural
but stopping her is part of general training. best to reward her with something. ie when she goes to eat it then say no - very simple and then give her a nice treat when she does not eat it. If you are not careful you will make it a game and make her eat it more and faster.
You need to be careful with pups to ensure you use positive reinforcement only and that you establish this with other training and rewards

dogs eat faeces. most animals' waste has a trace of extra nutritional value & some animals use this. as for rolling in it, this is a hunting tactic. most animals fear the smell of dog. however, no animal was ever attacked by faeces. both behaviours are survival traits from their wild state.

Some dogs do that. Keep the dog away from the litter box!
