Describe how much the deceased was respected and admired by you and others.

Mention a few of the deceased person's strengths, achievements, and successes.

If appropriate, include a short personal story or anecdote involving your relationship with the deceased.

Strike a careful balance between the formal tone of a sympathy letter and its deeply personal nature.

Remember that a mourner is emotionally drained, so keep your sympathy letter short--under one page in length.

If you can do so sincerely, offer to help in some way and include contact information such as your cell phone number and your email address.

If you have strong religious convictions, comfort the mourner with your belief that the deceased will find peace and happiness in a better world.

Put yourself in the mourner's place and imagine the kind of sympathy letter you would like to receive.

Some of these samples seem very formal. You should make it more personal.....when my dad died I was 14 and the formal letters I got just made me angrier...no reason, they just did. Going through a death is the hardest thing and by giving a sympathy letter is taking a big chance, but not giving one is also....there is no right way to do things but I would encourage you not to say you know how he feel, that could annoy him.....nobody knows how someone else feels about something even if they are going through the same situation.

Sorry, not much help but just thought I would add that.

Depending upon the cause of death, tragic, or prolonged? Sympathy always should come from the heart. I would say something like this....
" Dear ____________, It is with a heavy heart that we hear at "company name" offer you our condolences on the passing of you father. You are a good friend and colleague, and it is with the deepest sympathies that we offer you and your family our prayers at this time. Life and love will always go hand in hand, and a sons love for his father is a bond that will never be broken. May God accept your father as the great man we are sure he was, and may you find comfort in your fathers new found life.

Our deepest sympathies,

SAMPLE:
Id like to express my concern for the loss of your father in this time of mourning. I realize that no matter how many sympathy cards you receive or amount of comforting words that are given will replace the emptiness you are suffering from at this moment. Please know that if you need anything, I am here as your coworker and friend to comfort you.

Dear...
I am so sorry to hear about the death of your father, I cannot imagine how you must feel and my heart goes out to you. Please do not hesitate to call me anytime if you'd like to talk.
With our love / our prayers / our thoughts, .....

Keep it short and straight to the point, and they'll appreciate it.

I think it needs to be simple. Something like:

You and your family are in my prayers during this difficult time. Please let me know if there is anything I can help you with.

Sincerely,
(Your name here).

Hope this helps a little bit.
