For many, GOP stands for:

Grand old Party
Gallant old Party
God's own Party
or even
Get out and Push

For other Republicans LIKE ME it's:

Government of the People

The latter description is most closely associated with the Republican philosophy that the people can best govern themselves.

They had to use this bcause they couldn't come up with an acronym for "The Most Awesome Political Party in the History of the World."
