My grandmother recently has been experiencing a rapid heart rate (about 110-120), slight dizziness, and unexplained tiredness. We have ruled out heart attack symptoms since there are no shortness of breath or chest pain symptoms, but she does have an esophagus problem (ulcer) and an ulcerative colitus in her small intestine. Please help any way you can, as this has been going on for about 2-3 days, 4 days tomorrow. Thanks in advance!

She doesn't take any blood pressure medicatons, yet she does tend to have high blood pressure, but never too high. By "we" I mean the doctor and I. She doesn't speak very well English, neither does my grandfather, and my mother was at work so I was the translator. The doctor said that she isn't having any sort of heart attack or heart related problems. Also, she has had this before, but it was much worse. We THOUGHT it was as heart attack then, but it was her acid reflux and ulcer acting up which made it seem like a heart attack.

Have your grandmother evaluated to see if she is having an atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation is when the heart starts beating out of rhythm causing the symptoms you describe. AF is not a heart attack. She has the symptoms and AF is quite common in older adults. Contact her physician and tell the Dr you suspect she has AF and that you want to get her evaluated next time your grandmother is feeling weird. The Dr will give her an EKG and you'll know for sure in a very short time. If she does have AF, then she probably needs to take a blood thinner since atrial fibrillation puts a person at a much higher risk of having a stroke. The AF by itself is rarely dangerous and can often be treated with a beta blocker but the risk of stroke is very real and can be life changing for the worse.

Has she had her blood pressure checked lately? I would get her into a Dr. or even head her down to a store that has the blood pressure machine and check it. High blood pressure can cause this.

Of course we are all guessing, it could be a condition of fluid collecting around the heart, the beginning of congestive heart failure, it is pretty bad. I am also thinking she may have swelling in her throat, causing the heart to have to work harder, I would take her the dr. and have them do some additional testing. Good luck

If she is taking a blood pressure medicine with a diuretic in it, she could have low potassium. She might need to take a potassium supplement or reduce her medication or both.
