I currently have a black cocktail dress with a broach in the middle and the dress ties around the neck. It's a dress that can be worn to a lot of events. My mother keeps insisting that the cocktail dress might be a little too dressy for the wedding. She's thinking along the lines of dressier than casual and not as dressy as a cocktail dress. As far as we know, the wedding and reception are both in a hotel. Any suggestions?

The wedding is at night in Fort Lauderdale, FL in a hotel.

If it's at night and in a nicer hotel, and as long as the brooch isn't too gaudy or dressy, that should be fine. It's always better to be glamourous and slightly overdressed than to be Britney Spears.

It would help me more if I new what time the wedding is being held. If it is at six or after a more formal look is appropriate. You could wear a cocktail dress, something tea-length, or even a long dress. Usually...weddings and receptions at hotels are pretty classy. I would rather err at being over-dressed than under-dressed. The fact that it is a December wedding makes the black okay. I would not wear black to a wedding in the summer, or spring. Dark jewel tones are perfect for a December wedding.
I don't know what part of Florida you will be in....remember that it doesn't get real cold in some parts. If you will be in the panhandle ie. the Pensacola region in December it could be in the low 40's all the way to the high 70's during the day. You may want a wrap for your shoulders, should it be chilly. If you wear the black dress you could accent with a jewel toned wrap. Enjoy!

To me it depends on whether it's an evening wedding or not. If the wedding is after 5:00 and in December, I think a cocktail dress is acceptable. If you like it and it looks good on you, wear it!

depending on what time is the wedding. A cocktail dress is fine . If the weather is really nice, where some nice sling-back or one-toe open high heel sandals. Maybe you can not wear the broach and wear nice silver or gold necklace

What time of day is the wedding? Evening weddings are dressier than morning, mid-afternoon, or afternoon weddings. What colors are the wedding? Unless black is one of the colors (for the girl's dresses), it really isn't appropriate to wear a black dress to a wedding.

Since the wedding is in the evening, I'm assuing it will be formal; so the dress you described will probably be appropriate. Just make sure the bride is not having her attendants wearing black.
And take a light wrap with you in case it gets cool...or you feel the need to cover.

Wear pastel colors, at least knee length. No cocktail dresses, no matter how transitable to any wedding.

Wear pastel colors, they are lighter and usually more casual. Pink, light orange and lavender are all excellent choices. Don't go into deep reds and greens, stick to the pastels. With it wear some nice white or mint green shoes.
