Going to the Lions/Fortyniners game next weekend and want to know what sort od\f tailgating and pre/postgame fun there is to have in Detroit.

There's not a lot of public tailgating in Detroit around Ford Field.. most tailgaters are families, or are friends of families... you can definitely explore the surface lots around Ford Field if you're feeling adventourous.
For after or before the game, Greektown is about a 5-10 minute walk away from Ford Field, and there's a lot to do and visit. Get pizza at Pizza Papalis (best deep dish in Detroit). Or go to Pegasus for an authentic Greek meal- (saganaki- OPA! always great)... or if you're in a seafood restaurant mood, Fishbones right next to Greektown casino is a lively atmosphere and great dishes (the Pasta Orleans and Jambalaya are good New Orleans classics!
For entertainment.... bring some money and play some slots at Greektown... or if you like poker, texas-hold'em especially, bring $100 or more and put your name on the list in the poker room (for game days, there may be a wait). Sunday mornings there's a $125 tournament I believe starting at 10AM... you might miss kickoff, but it'd be because you're doing well in the tournament and winning money! There's also bars that are hopping including the Old Shellilagh (Irish pub), Cheli's Chili Bar (food and drinks), Bouzouki (adult/strip club) and 313 Jacoby's (live music weekends... don't know about Sundays though). If you're willing to drive a little and deal with parking, Garden Bowl (bowling alley) combined with The Majestic (music club/bar) is also a popular hangout, it's about 2 miles north on Woodward from Ford Field.
Ride the People Mover and explore the city if you run out of things to do!

I think the best tailgating is at the parking lots near Eastern Market. It is about a1/2 mile walk to the stadium and they allow BBQs (closer to the stadium, many of the lots do not allow BBQs or cooking of any kind due to city laws about open fires).
If you prefer to hit the bars pre-post game I would try (in no particular order):
Hockey Town Cafe
Town Pump
Chelli's Chilli
The Elwood
Jacoby's
Miscellaneous Greektown eateries/bars

Go to greektown casino. Has cheap drinks, not to mention safe from the homeless bugging you for money. Good food within 20 feet of the casino.
