The aspect of the film is the "love" of a mother to her son and a boy to his mother. A connection. And, even though his mother was dead years ago (because he killed her and she wanted him to be her lover as well), there was still this "bond" that they had for each other. So much so that he pretended that he was her and how she would've reacted to him with any women in his life-or, any woman wanting to come to his life.
Even the last scene in the back of the police car, he had her arm and was stroking it. Then, the way he looked into the camera and smiling-that wasn't Norman, per se, but, his mother smiling.
A very twisted approach of a mother and child bonding, courtesy of Alfred Hitchcock.
