I believe there was a crew of investigators in a mansion. I remember a cat terrorizing the cast. A machine was used to purge the house of ghosts that was found in the main hall. Finally the ghosts body was found in a secret room inbehind the chapel of the mansion. I know it's not alot to go on. I was 8 or 9 when I saw it. It scared the pegeebers out of me. can anyone help

You are thinking of "The Haunting" 1963, starring Julie Harris and Claire Bloom. I think it is available on DVD.
It scared me a lot as a kid too.
