Polterguist is a great film and A Nightmare On Elmstreet 2 was my favourite of the 7... Amityville (the original) was pretty good.
But my favourite has got to be An American Werewolf In London... It's the most realistic looking Werewolf i've ever seen and the transformation from man to wolf is amazing... Never been equalled or bettered.

Well, there's this old b&w film with Vincent Price in which he is obsessed by the idea of being buried alive, for cathalepsy runs in the family, so he has a coffin and a maosoleum made to order that would both open from within in case he comes to after the funeral and he stocks the place up with food and drink in case he still gets stuck inside so that he can get by for a period. Of course, this being a horror film, the whole thing fails to work and the film takes a really creepy scary anguishing turn. I saw it in my early teens and I couldn't sleep for days!! Does anybody know the title?

Had this discussion last night. There are a few, have to be Blair Witch Project which actually scared the life out of me first time I saw it. Although have been on several ghost hunts since then and they can never be beaten...Then The Shining which terrifies whenever......Also The Changeling frightened me a while ago

I think mine would be the classics like The Exorcist or Friday the 13th... or even Nightmare on Elm Street. Yeah, the last 2 aren't as creepy now, but The Exorcist gets me every time. Oh, and we can't forget about The Shining. :)

Going back a few years now it was a "B"movie called It"s Alive the scary part"s were done in a way that the usual big build up of music did not produce a scary bit they just came out of the blue.
Scared the birds sh----ss made them cling on tight i took two or three to see that one

One of only a few films ever to put me literally on the edge of my seat was Alien. Revolutionary for the time.

But for absolutely genuine plot and storyline look no further than The Devil Rides Out. A classic.

I believe Hitchcock said "There is more terror in the anticipation of a shot, than in the shot itself", so in general I prefer the less gory films.

Having said that, Alien scared me witless.

Loved (the original) Wicker Man, and Witchfinder General.

Also try Night of the Hunter.
