When a dentist or hygienist gives a cleaning do they clean around every tooth or just the dirty ones? How come they breeze right through some areas while scraping really hard in other areas?

They clean each one. Some teeth, depending on the location in your mouth, build plague faster and require more scraping/cleaning.

Hygienist cleans every tooth, but some teeth have more of a build up than others. In my case the back wisdom teeth for some reason have more plaque than the others. Also sometimes the plaque can get below the gum line in places and they have to clean beneath the gum line.

Your hygienist or dentist is trained to tell with an instrument called an explorer to detect where there are tartar deposits.The dental term for tartar is calculus.We don't want to scale your clean and smooth surfaces as we may be removing cementum or enamel which if done too agressively over time can make your teeth sensitive.Believe me,many people have many areas with heavy calculus that we must hand scale and ultrasonic aggressively around most surfaces!It sounds like you have pretty good oral hygiene,that's why there is not much scaling in certain areas.

Actually, there are some areas that really require more thorough cleaning because of tartar or plaque. But if you are really concerned about your dental health then use use Crest White Strips sample. Hygienst make sure every tooth is clean ,but some have more calculas than others so they spend more time on the teeth that have more build up-as RDA

They clean all around the tooth... more build up of tartat means more effort to remove. the lesser build up less effort.. so u feel that they r breezing though.. outcome... if you see ur teeth are clean... the job is good.
