As I can recall there was MTV in 1981. That's when it was all music videos, no commercials, no specials, no "shows" just music. This is my only memory of when cable came out. Sad but true! Now the amount of channels depends upon what kind of package you sign up for.

To my knowledge, and I could be wrong, this is just my recollection, ON TV was the first "cable". It was the precursor to HBO, and came out in about 1976 or so. The first place I lived where cable was an option was in 1983. I seem to remember about 25 channels.

Don't know, I grew up on a farm with no cable. I imagine that there was at least HBO back then.
