First their last names were "cromwell" and now they have the last name "piper" was this ever explained? and what happened to Marnie Cromwell/Piper's Dad?

Marnie's mom married a mortal and wanted to live a "normal" life; she took her husbands last name, Piper, naturally who ended up dying just before the first Halloweentown movie.
Aggie is Marnie's mom's mother and her last name is Cromwell.
When Marnie came into her powers, Marnie is considered one of the Cromwell witches even though she still goes by Marnie Piper.

The cromwell kids last name is Piper because the mother married a mortal. So they are cromwells on their mothers side. I missed it too until my wife explained it to me. I was like ohhh yeah.

I know why did they do that it went from "Cromwell" to "Piper". To answer your question I am not sure why they did that.
