make sure that the dvd you use is compatible with the recorder... such as DVD +R/RW or -R/RW.... the plus or minus is just a format that the dvd recognizes and plays. So be careful when choosing

Sometimes it's simpler than that...
Make sure your Disc is clean and not scratched up or covered with lint. Those sensors that read discs are really sensitive.

DVDR's are not the same as a Tivo or DVR. They can record two shows at the same time, or let you watch a show you have already recorded while you record two more.

Also verify that you finalized the DVD.
