My father has sleep apnea and the Dr. gave him a blood pressure taking machine so for fun we took mine. My blood pressure was like 145 over 80 or maybe a little higher and my pulse rate was 100 beats per minute. I am 24 years old and was wondering if this is normal. I plan to bring it to my Dr.'s attention at my next visit.

Well my dad's pulse was like between 70 and 90 over the course of the week and mine was 100 and he's smoked for years and is 49 years old. I have smoked for the past 6 years.

If it were consistenly that rate it wouldn't be normal, but everyone's blood pressure will fluctuate all over the place during various times of the day.

To take your blood pressure properly you should be sitting calmly at rest for a good 10 minutes before taking it. If I rush around or am tired or am having a rotten day, my blood pressure will be high, but if I'm rested in a good mood etc. it will be normal. It is the RESTING blood pressure that matters...ie if your blood pressure NEVER went lower than 145/80 then I'd be worried.

Also, losing weight and exercise, even losing 10 pounds can changed your blood pressure and make it drop by a good 10 points. Exercise and never let it get to that!!!!! Even a 20 minute walk a day is exercise...so walk, walk, walk and eat well and DO NOT EAT SALT. Everything has salt in it, but if you eat salty, it will raise your BP and keep it up. That will be the first thing they tell you to cut back on and it's hard as we are bombarded with tons of salt in EVERYTHING we eat and drink, including water!!! (Sodium...check it out!)

Normal blood pressure should be under 140/90. 145 is not especially high but 100 is a fast pulse. Try it again a couple of times before rushing off to the doctors.

for your age, that pressure is a tad high, do you smoke? Usually a resting heart rate should be between 70 and 80 for someone your age, but smoking will always increase heart rate.

It's a little high, but it changes all the time. Test again, and see your Dr,
