YOU can NOT add garlic to cat's food because it will destory cat's red blood cells. Just to let you and everyone know. I 'm not sure about Dog but talk to your vet if it's ok to give Garlic to your dog.
Frontline, Advantage and Revolution can been found at all Vet clinics or animal hospital, all you need is bring your pet in to weight and the vet will explain which options you have. I've found Revolution works wonders for my pets and in long run it will save my cat's health and also, over the counter flea treatments (there's hundreds different treatments over in the open market) does not really work and can be very seriously injure your pet.
My vet said that if my pet is strictly indoor pets, Advantage or Frontline Plus will be OK, and Revolution is best for indoor/outdoor pets. I'm Canadian, the only products that my vet provides are either Advantage Multi or Revolution so I picked Revolution because of my cat's ear mites and it has more than Advantage and it only cost few dollar more.
Wish i help that much :) smile

Whatever you do, DON'T feed your dogs garlic. It is toxic to dogs and cats and will cause a condition called "Hemolytic Anemia" or "Heinz Body Anemia". This can lead to death in your pet. http://www.petsbynature.com/Garlic.htm

If you are looking for a quick flea fix at home, you can use Dawn dishsoap (w/o bleach). This is only a quick fix and if you don't rid your home of the fleas, the fleas will only hop back on your dog. After wetting your dog down, apply the dishsoap starting at the back of the neck and going down (this prevents the fleas from running to the face). Work into a lather and allow it to remain on your dog for 3-5 minutes. Rinse completely and then dry.
Frontline, Advantage, & Revoution don't have to be bought at a vet's office. They do sell them, but you can also buy from places like: http://www.1800petmeds.com/all.asp?LV=10 . Don't use off brands like Hartz or Sargeants from Wal-mart, I have seen way too many animals that have had adverse reactions to them. If you choose to use the flea drops, don't bathe your dog 3 days before or 3 days after the application. The bathe prevents the oils from being properly absorbed by the animals skin, therefore decreasing it's effectiveness. Frontline is waterproof (I think Advantage is too, but not sure) and your dog can get wet after 3 days from the application.

I have heard apple cider vinegar in the pets water will help, also make an essential spray, base can be water, use lavender oil, citronella oil, eucalyptus oil, cedar oil and lemon grass might work too. Sprinkle borax on the carpet. There is an herb called pennyroyal, if you plant it it should help with fleas in the environment. even cedar wood chips around the area The thing to remember with home remedies, is that they usually are not long lasting. and the trick to controlling the fleas is to get rid of the eggs. Typical rule of thumb for every 1 flea you see there are 100 more in the environment. Good Luck!

Hi
There is a mixture of oils that you can make up. Equal parts of eucalyptus and penny royal oil. I have used this for 13 years on my dogs. They have never had fleas. Put a few drops on their collar every 2 to 3 months. I also put a few drops on my carpets and essentially have no flies or spiders. It is quite strong at first, smells like Halls cough drops. It works wonders if you don't mind the smell for a few hours. The scent does go away. Good luck! By the way, I chose this route due to while working at a local animal hospital the chemical drops caused many dogs and cats skin irritation, even baldness.

I'm not sure what some people are talking about the Frontline and Advantage flea drops are available at petco or any other pet store for that matter all you have to do is ask at one of the sale counters and they will get it for you. However it is much cheaper to purchase them from Amazon.com. Good luck

The only one I know is to take a bowl and fill it with water and a drop of dish soap. Put it in the corner of a room. Some how it is supposed to attract fleas and flies. I don't know if it works, I've just heard that. and... Yes, they are only available to by at the Vet. You can order them online though, www.1800petmeds.com
and you can also buy them on ebay! Good Luck!

Salt. Yes you can apply it to the skin. I did it when all 4 of my dogs got fleas. They died quickly and didn't come back. Plus I sprinkled salt in my carpet and let it sit for a week.

Mix powdered Brewer's Yeast with the dog/cat food. This will give the pet's skin an odour that helps repel fleas and mosquitos.

Boric acid, sold as a bug powder, is great for killing fleas (and other bugs) in the house. It is cheap and non-toxic. It works by damaging the bug's exoskeleton, causing it to dry up. It comes in a squeeze bottle. Puff some on the carpet and sweep it in. Also treat furniture and sleeping areas.
