It was a good movie in an age of remakes. I cried when Jim Carey walked away and left - tears of joy. Good line:" I ... AM THE CREATOR ........ of a tevevision program."

8 out of 10. It's good, but not great. Jim Carrey is quite good in this movie - a mixture of dramatic and comedic acting (both of which he is good at, although he tends to over-act in comedies: see "Liar Liar")

The plot was good; original compared to the rest of the movies at the time The Truman Show was released - too many blockbuster movies in the alien/sci-fi genre and an overdose of special-effects (which we still seem to be experiencing in movies).

The one thing I most dislike about "The Truman Show" (and also "Ed-TV" which also came out in the same year I think), is that it seems to have spawned ("inspired") all those stupid reality TV shows as a result - Big Brother, Popstar, Idol, Biggest Loser etc.

I'd give it a "1" out of ten.

This is a film that stretches irony well beyond the breaking point. In order for this film to work you have to buy into the premise that a corporation would be allowed to adopt an infant (totally illegal); that they would then go to the expense of creating a structure so large it could be seen from the moon (logistically and monetarily disastrous) all for the pretext of creating an isolated world for the benefit of one child; and then that over several decades, the child doesn't somehow figure this out, or isn't told this by the literally thousands of people who work there.

Moreover, there was no serious attempt to disguise the symbolism. The whole thing is being run by a guy named "Christos?" Wow, that's about as subtle as a North Korean nuclear test. The premise is ludicrous on it's face, and the metaphors painfully obvious. And because I couldn't buy into it, the film was a waste.

I thought "The Truman Show" illustrated on a literal level what celebrities in our culture go through - their every move scrutinized and their private lives blazoned on the pages of supermarket tabloids.

I think Jim Carrey is greatly underrated as an actor. Another movie of his I liked was "The Cable Guy," which illustrated the extent that our culture is immersed in television.
