I have a 2005 Nissan Altama S 2.5 and i have the stock audio system in it, yesterday the audio stopped working when a family member was driving it. when they came home i checked out turning the car off and on and there was no thump or anything else that could tell if the speakers shorted, and then i checked the fuse panel inside and it said that the audio and mirrors are on the same fuse, so i checked the mirrors and they worked. i could not really check the fuse because it was dark outside, any help would be great. it is saying the radio is on it goes to diff. radio stations, and shows the cd is playing but no sound
and please tell me what i can do.

there are two separate fuses for your radio one under the dash and the other sometimes under the hood along the left side one is for the primary amp and one to power the radio check the one under the hood

First , did you get the 'premium audio' option with amplifier?
If no, then the normal case is that the audio amp is built into the head unit in the dash. So highest probability is that that circuit has gone bad.
It is quite reasonable that it could go bad and not take out the fuse.
Anyway, if the car is under warranty then the dealer should swap out the whole head unit.
If it's out of warranty then either you can buy a head unit (dealers usually charge ~$400) fix the head unit (probably $150~200) or put in an aftermarket unit.
If you gamble you could buy a used head unit from ebay or such, but that's at your risk.
If you want to fix it the cheaper way is to pull it from the dash and see who made it for Nissan. Then call that manufacturer for an authorized service center.

Check all the fuse's under the dash and under the hood, there should be 2 different fuse panels.
If there is no fuse blown in either spot than you have a bad ground on your amplifier or your amplifier output's are burned out.First wiggle and check all connection's to the stereo, amplifier and speaker's that you can reach.Check any black wire's coming out of the amplifier, the thickest one should be screwed into the body pretty close to the amplifier, make sure it is not broke or corroded. Also make sure to check the connector coming out of the back of the stereo, some have separate one's for the power and the speaker's.
If it's an 05 you should still ahve some warranty left on it,you should be able to take it to the dealership and ask their opinion if it's not. They should give you a wiring diagram of the stereo if you ask them.

The amplifier could be on a different fuse. Check the other fuses.

could be the amplifier outputs got fried.
or there is always the possiblity that the connector
on the back of the radio vibrated loose. or another connector in the wiring.

if your friend was really thumping he could have fryed the speakers themselves...

Well, when speakers wires short out, it doesnt hurt the speakers, it blows the output stage on the stereo. It sounds to me like you need a new stereo. The speakers are probably fine.
