I like your question. The best way to tell for sure is to see their DD 214. It will show if they were awarded a Vietnam Service Medal and a Vietnam Campaign Medal. This still doesn't tell what in capacity they served. There are a lot rear echelon commandos who like to tell war stories, but never saw any action.
