Don't say anything negative, like calling southerners rednecks because that is rude and not true.
What do you think it means to be southern?

I don't know if you want a definition or not, but how about I just list our greatest qualities.

WE HAVE GREAT MANNERS!!!!! Plus, we have great food, warm hearts, and a great sense of humor!

We southerners are very charming. We have our own way of saying things. We use expressions like "I'm fixing to" and "I reckon" and "it's over yonder" quite frequently. Places can be "down the road aways" and we are usually "good to go" when we're satisfied. If you ask for directions and we don't know, we will say "You can't get there from here".

Southern charm:

We still say "Ma'am" and "Sir" to anyone over the age of 20. We still say "please" and "thank you" because we have "home trainin" or "good up-bringin". We address all women as "Miz" and it doesn't matter if she's a Miss, a Mrs or a Ms.

Southern Women are known for their charm:

We would never intentionally embarrass someone. If we see you and can't remember your name, we would never ask. We would just call you sweetie or sugar or honey!

Also, Southern women do not sweat, we "puspire" as in "Good Lawd it's hot! Ah do bleeve ahm puspiring!"

If she is a genteel woman, she will ask for a sweet tea to cool off. If she's a redneck woman , she will ask you to pass her another "cold'un" which means a cold beer.

More Southern charm: We wave at everybody we see, whether we know them or not. I believe it is self defense, you don't want Miz Jones to say " I saw that ole Wanda driving down Main Street and she didn't even wave! She must think she's better'n everybody!"
Humorous southern charm:

Someone once noted that a Southerner can get away with the most awful kind of insult just as long as it's prefaced with the words, "Bless her heart" or "Bless his heart." As in, "Bless his heart, if they put his brain on the head of a pin, it'd roll around like a BB on a six lane highway." Or, "Bless her heart, she can't help being ugly, but she could've stayed home." As long as the heart is sufficiently blessed, the insult can't be all that bad.

Oh, GIrl, I am Southern. I live in Mississippi..Being a redneck doesn't mean what most people think. Having a red neck means one is a hard worker! Anyway, to be Southern, you have to be sweet as sugar and tough as nails. Rent Steel Magnolias.

I'm from Mississippi, and I have a bit of an accent and say "y'all", but that's where the "southerness" stops... least I think so.
