Within the Monty Python show itself they were a team and pretty nearly equal but John Cleese proved himself to be the superior comic when he made the Faulty Towers TV show. That is still the absolute funniest TV ever of all time and I cannot see it ever losing the title. John Cleese!

If you're talking about Monty Python, I'm going with either Eric Idle or John Cleese.

Good question.
Not Terry Jones. Not Idle, either.
Not Chapman.
Toss up between Cleese and Palin.
Cleese was more visual, Palin better with lines.

In terms of writing, I always thought that Terry Gilliam was the most brilliant Python.

I Liked Eric Idle.....cause even though the Pythons have split (one permanantly), he tries to keep the spirit of Monty Python alive, with such great work as 'Spamalot' (GO AND SEE IT! IT'S EXCELLENT! LOL) and the re-masters of the Python albums.

As writers I've no idea who wrote what but as a performer it has to be John Cleese. Python aside just Faulty Towers alone would win him the vote.

They were all fantastic in Python - each fed off the other. BUT the one sketch that still cracks me up is Michael Palin in "Every Sperm Is Sacred"...just watched it again on google video. Terry was the best in a dress tho'!!!
